So whats matrix?

In short, its a little chat server. A little like Discord, and a little like IRC. The magic is, it can be federated, meaning someone from one server can still talk to their friends elsewhere!

You can think of it like email. If one person is using Google for the email (so they would be at @gmail.com), and another is using Yahoo (and they would be on @yahoo.com), they can still communicate.

With that, all of a person's information and messages and media would be stored on their homeserver, in this case matrix.wolfbrained.chat.

Whats neat about this set up is its completely decentralized. Theres no monolithic server somewhere eating up all your data and selling it. Its just a bunch of webadmins, like ourselves, wanting to provide a cool service to their friends :3

Oh cool, so how do I get started?

Pretty easily in fact! Simply read our rules and Terms of Service here and download Element for your phone or computer*

Once you have done that, you should be able to register account, but this next part is important-

If you want to use our homeserver, change matrix.org to matrix.wolfbrained.chat. There are any number of servers out there, so if you'd like you can always use another as your homeserver, just be sure to research them first!

After that, add in your username, password, and email. You should have a confirmation email sent momentarily! (Be sure to check your spam folder!)

Once you've done that, you'll land somewhere called WolfWaiting. This is a waiting room to help filter out any bots or spammers

After that, you are welcome to chat and enjoy! We are currently working on setting up a more public space for users, which may or may not be up by the time you read this!~
